Styrene Butadiene Styrene (SBS)

SBS or Styrene Butadiene Styrene is a thermoplastic and hard elastomer that was introduced to the market around 1965.

Different grades of SBS show many properties of vulcanized rubber, such as flexibility, softness, and springiness. The low price and high production speed have forced manufacturers in various fields to use this special material.

These materials have thermoplastic properties due to their chemical structure. They have multi-phase compositions in which the phases are chemically bonded to each other through batch polymerization or block copolymerization. At least one of the phases is a styrene polymer that is hard at room temperature, but when heated The fluid becomes Meanwhile, the other phase is a softer substance that acts like rubber at room temperature and behaves like rubber.

Applications of SBS in industries:

  • Shoe industries (soles, shoe ivory), food packaging (due to the average final application temperature)
  • Extrusion of sheets, pipes, wire covers
  • Adhesives, sealants and coatings
  • Viscosity index increaser for lubricating oils.
  • as a modifier or additive for thermosetting materials (SBS is thermoplastic)
  • Qiro road construction industry
